A PROFESSIONAL and prolific burglar who broke into a house in the town ten weeks after being released from a prison sentence for burglary has been jailed for five years.

Gavin Wright, 39, of Moore Road, Ipswich, broke into the property in Dalton Road, Ipswich, on May 19 but did not steal anything, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Wright denied burglary with intent to steal but was found guilty after a trial.

Sentencing him Judge Rupert Overbury said he had been committing burglaries since the age of 13 and was a “professional and prolific” burglar.

“Custody is an occupational hazard for you,” said the judge.

He told Wright that if continued committing offences he would receive longer and longer sentences in custody.

He said the burglary was only unsuccessful due to the alertness of the occupiers.

Speaking after the case, Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Morgan said the case reflected the success of the force’s Operation Drawbridge, which aims to reduce the number of burglaries by encouraging homeowners to take simple measures to protect their house.

“This sentence demonstrates Suffolk Police’s commitment to bringing prolific burglars to justice and to ensure that they are dealt with appropriately,” said DCI Morgan.

“Burglary is a crime that causes huge distress to victims and for this reason it will not be tolerated. We will endeavour to identify, charge and put before the court those found to be responsible.

“This case underpins the commitment of Operation Drawbridge and should act as a deterrent for those individuals who have or are thinking of committing this type of crime. We will continue to strive to reduce burglaries further.

“Members of the public can also help us to catch burglars by reporting any suspicious behaviour or activity that they see in their area. For example this could be if they see anyone hanging around a house they don’t believe should be there, or if they know of anyone selling goods they suspect to be stolen.”

If you witness a burglary in progress or suspicious behaviour immediately call 999 or if you have information relating to burglaries please call 101.
