Police guard the scene of an alleged rape in Cromer Road, Ipswich.

A rape inquiry is under way today after a woman told police she was attacked in an alleyway near Norwich Road.

A 27-year-old woman contacted officers at around 10.40pm yesterday stating she had been grabbed by a man and raped earlier in the evening.

The victim had been walking along Norwich Road in Ipswich and turned into Cromer Road at around 8.30pm. While walking along the road towards Bramford Lane she was approached by a man who asked her the time.

The man then took hold of the woman and pulled her into an area where bins are stored and raped her.

The man is described as mixed race, 35 to 40 years old with short black hair. He wore black jeans, black shoes and a black waist-length jacket.

An area in Cromer Road has been cordoned off in order for crime scene investigators to carry out an investigation.

The victim has been seen by specially-trained officers and is receiving support.

Anyone who was in the Cromer Road/Norwich Road area last night and saw a man matching this description or noticed any suspicious activity should telephone acting Detective Inspector Darren Bruce at Ipswich Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

  • It's right between 2 houses on a built up road. I'd have thought her screams for help would have alerted the whole street.

  • Yes that's a possibility Renegade. It's incredible to think that someone would do such a thing in a built up are with so many people close by. Lets hope they catch the person responsible.
