Police seal off an Ipswich alleyway after allegations are made of a sexual assault

POLICE are warning Christmas revellers in the town centre to be extra vigilant after a woman was allegedly raped in an alleyway.

Officers have launched an investigation after a 24-year-old woman told detectives she was sexually assaulted around 11.30pm on Friday.

The woman said she was waiting for friends outside a pub in Upper Brook Street and became engaged in conversation with a man.

They then walked together in the direction of Sainsbury’s and went into the alleyway, where the man raped her.

Police said he then made off towards the Cox Lane car park where he got into a small car and drove off.

He is described as black, in his late 20s to 30s, of muscular build, around 5ft 9ins tall, with short black Afro hair and a moustache. He was wearing a coat and dark blue jeans.

Anne-Marie Breach, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary, said: “It is important to remember over Christmas that people enjoying a night out should not go off with strangers as it may lead them into situations they are not comfortable with.

“People need to be careful and look out for each other, and make sure everyone gets home safely.”

Superintendent Martin Ransome added: “We work closely with our partners, licensed premises and Street Pastors to ensure people have a safe, enjoyable time.

“By taking a few simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.”

Police want to trace the man and need to hear from anyone who was in the area around this time on Friday night as they may have information that can help the enquiry.
