Ipswich: Roads boost aimed at keeping traffic flowing

Ipswich is to get another £5 million over the next five years to help get traffic in and out of the town centre.

The money includes £1.8 million announced as part of this week’s growth fund settlement from the government. The rest will come from the county council and other central government funds.

It will be spent on the major arterial roads into the town – the A1214 from Rushmere Heath to Copdock Mill including Valley Road and Colchester Road, Norwich/Bramford Road, Felixstowe/Nacton Road, and Wherstead Road.

The exact projects have still to be drawn up by the county council, but engineers are hoping to learn from the improvements to Nacton Road and Ransomes Way from the A14 to Warren Heath which are due to be carried out later this year.

That will see lanes and junctions re-aligned to enable them to cope with more traffic.

Similar treatment will be given to the major roads heading to the town centre to ensure Ipswich is prepared for the next phase of growth over the next few years.

The aim is to prepare the town for the development of the northern fringe, a possible new village at Martlesham Heath, up to 1,500 jobs being created in new businesses at Futura Park, and further development at Ransomes Europark.

On the other side of town the county is preparing for the development of the former sugar beet factory at Sproughton for business, and further industrial development off Norwich Road.

Traffic lights on these roads are due to be linked into the new computer-controlled system which should ensure traffic flows better in and out of the town – but the growth in the number of vehicles means that more delays may become inevitable.

MP Ben Gummer said: “This is not going to solve all the problems in the town, but it will allow some incremental improvements over the next few years.

“It will hopefully ease some of the worst bottlenecks and we can then look towards more improvements in the future.”

Borough council leader David Ellesmere, who is hoping to take the seat next year, was keen for his authority to be involved in any plans.

He said: “I hope they talk to us about what they do – we could have had better communication over some aspects of the Travel Ipswich programme.

“But in the longer term we need much more investment – especially to ensure there is a much more robust system in place when the Orwell Bridge is closed.”

  • if people want to keep sitting in the traffic on the same old route and moan about the lights ... tough ...get yourselves a map and work out another route ... maybe a little longer but can knock quite a bit of time off your journey... direct routes do not work in this sad town ...

  • For years the powers that be have tried everything to gridlock the town, and have basically succeeded, Back Hamlet, a main route into town blocked, Princes Street Roundabout gone, now held up most of the time, a curious habit of making you go in the opposite direction to where you want to go, eg. turn west at the top of Bond Street when you want to go east, Rope Walk, another main route in, closed, bus lanes that the buses won't go in eg from Rushmere Heath to the roundabout, sweeping out of kerbs on numerous junctions designed to slow you down or reduce the traffic to one lane, now they are trying to tell us that they want to keep traffic flowing??? What a joke!

  • @Dataminer - A greed, although they have to justify the extornaite fees they pay these outside consultants to come in, who never use the roads. Seriously why doesn't SCC, IBC traffic for Ipswich or whoever is in charge of sorting this out, actually ask the public who use the roads daily for their opinion?

  • As predicted the SCC improvements have been a disaster. The roads are just at a standstill at rush hour and slow when not. All they are doing is wasting everyone's time and money on vanity projects. Complete shambles. STOP PUTTING UP TRAFFIC LIGHTS EVERYWHERE. There is no need for a traffic light at EVERY junction. Period.

  • I used to cycle into the town centre when I went to work but it's just too dangerous since they stopped all the traffic from moving. Clogged up roads are far worse for cyclists than ones with traffic that move. I now drive instead of cycling but am lucky in that I can choose my work hours so can get to my office before morning rush hour and leave before evening rush hour. Incidentally, the office is quite a few floors up overlooking the Princes St and Civic Drive junction and now there are always queues most of the day, when they used to be rare even during rush hour.

  • Bring back the Park and Ride service from Whitehouse - its one of the worst things to happen to Ipswich - How can the government Ipswich Council on one hand say we need to use more public transport and then close a bus station!! Local people need to stop relying on their cars so much also and at least try to walk or cycle into town some days. No more traffic lights and bring back the roundabouts ...rant over!

  • You don't need £5 million to simply open the roads that were brainlessly closed like Back Hamlet and Rope Walk to start to ease the flow of traffic into town. Perhaps they could build a roundabout in Princes street with the money.

  • In my experience the traffic light sequencing seems designed to slow up and frustrate trafic movement. Even at periods of low traffic it takes an aged to get across from the west side to say Neptune Quay. I sometimes wonder if we did as they do in India and just not have any lights it might be better if not a little scary!

  • "That will see lanes and junctions re-aligned to enable them to cope with more traffic"............ Presumably that means reinstating two lanes at many junctions that were reduced to single lane in the previous lash up of "traffic imrpvements". The obvious solution, (apart from handing the project over to people who actually know what they are doing,) is to remove significant numbers of unnecessary traffic lights, but no doubt they will put more up with this windfall.
