An Ipswich runner is preparing to pound the streets of the capital in this year’s London Marathon and raise vital funds for charity.

Former Stoke High School Nathan Roxburgh has been in training for the 26.2mile challenge since October and despite picking up a minor knee injury recently, he says he is ready for the race.

Mr Roxburgh, who is currently serving in Plymouth with the Royal Navy, will be running for Asthma UK – a cause particularly close to him, and one which he has already raised more than £1,800 for.

The 20-year-old said: “I had it more when I was a child but my mum and uncle, they still suffer from it now.

“When I applied for it, they gave me different (causes) that I could do it for but this one was personal to me.”

Nathan’s mum, Jayne Ling, added: “A lot of us in out family are asthmatic so that is why he chose them.

“He is doing really well and he has raised lots of money.”

Asthma UK helps fund research into the condition while also providing information and services to sufferers.

Among the fundraising events for the charity was a medium evening with Stephanie Carr – which raised hundreds of pounds and benefited from raffle prizes from a number of local companies.

But now with just a few days before the big event, Mr Roxburgh’s focus is now firmly on completing the marathon.

He added: “The hard bit is done now.

“I have done the winter run and the wet and windy Sunday runs – now it is time for the run in London and it will be a bit different running down the A12 on a wet morning.

“I have done a half marathon before but this will be my first marathon.”
