A skimming device used to steal bank account details was found at a cash point at an Ipswich supermarket, police have said.

Officers removed the device at an East of England Co-op store in Foxhall Road after a member of the public alerted staff at the supermarket to the scam.

Police were called at around 12pm yesterday and seized the skimming device, a Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said.

The incident has prompted officers to warn people to remain “vigilant” when using cash machines.

The force is advising people to take the following measures to protect against ATM fraud:

Where possible, consider using ATMs inside banks rather than on the street.

Be aware of who is around you when withdrawing cash.

Inspect the ATM for any devices before inserting your card.

Cover the keypad when entering your pin.

If you suspect anything contact the police and the bank immediately.

Do not attempt to remove the device.

Report any suspected misuse to your card issuer immediately.

Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour around the ATM or has information relating to this crime is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
