COMPLAINTS levelled at UCS students have ranged from swimming in the wet dock through to excessive noise, it can be revealed today.

The figures, seen in a Freedom of Information request, have also shown there have been several occasions when concerns have been raised about students smoking in residences.

But university chiefs have praised the behaviour of their students after it was revealed that since September 2010, just 14 complaints have been received relating to student behaviour.

Susan Spencer, director of planning and partnerships at UCS, said: “We are relatively small but proportionately the level of complaints is very low.

“I’m very grateful that we do have grown-up students who lead normal lives.”

In the academic year starting September 2010 – there was one complaint received relating to students swimming in the wet dock.

In 2011/12 there were 11 complaints received, which included a complaint relating to 26 students making too much noise.

So far in this academic year, there have been two complaints which include one concerning noise and another concerning smoking in residences.

Ms Spencer added: “In all cases the students concerned have received a letter from myself discussing the issue and explaining possible consequences.

“Additional support is also offered if relevant.

“In two instances students have been called to attend a meeting with their landlord and myself in order to resolve the issue.”

In recent years, homeowners on the Waterfront have raised concerns about excessive noise in the area, particularly coming from Athena Hall.

Complaints in 2010 resulted in the university hosting a briefing to show students how to be better neighbours.

  • So that's a spectacularly misleading headline then... It makes it seems like it's going to be about how misbehaved the students are but actually it's about how surprisingly well behaved they are, barring a few trouble makers you would expect. Way to get people behind the university Ipswich Star!
