Billy Whinney

TEARAWAY teen Billy Whinney is under lock and key today after being sentenced to 12 months in custody.

The 19-year-old of Maidenhall Green, Ipswich, was given six months’ detention in a young offenders’ institution by Ipswich Crown Court after being convicted of two breaches of his anti-social behaviour order.

Whinney was made the subject of the ASBO by magistrates in 2010.

Under the terms of the order he was banned from associating with a man called Richard Scarse in Renfrew Road, Ipswich.

During Whinney’s trial the court heard that on April 29 he was seen at around 3pm and at 5pm with Mr Scarse in Renfrew Road, Ipswich.

When a police officer tried to arrest Whinney he allegedly pulled away from the officer.

The court heard that after his arrest Whinney denied “associating” with Mr Scarse.

The defendant told police officers their first meeting had been a coincidence.

He accepted talking to him later, but said it had taken place in Norbury Road and not in Renfrew Road

Whinney, who had denied the breaches of his ASBO, was also sentenced to a further six months in detention for a theft.

The offence took place at the Shell garage in Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, in December last year.
