The male teenager was arrested on suspicion of committing seven burglaries and two attempted burglaries in the road in little more than a month.

A Suffolk Constabulary spokeswoman said the suspect was also detained in connection with the theft of a bicycle in the same road, along with theft from a person in nearby Victoria Street. The teenager was interviewed by officers, before being released pending further inquiries.

Officers have been investigating a spate of break-ins at homes in Surrey Road during December and January.

Among the burglaries were two which occurred over the night of January 12 and 13.

During one of the break-ins which happened between 7.15pm and 6.30am, two mountain bikes were stolen.

The second incident took place between 11pm and 8.30am. A handbag, jewellery, cosmetics and silverware were taken.

Another of the break-ins happened between 7pm on January 8 and 8.45am on January 9, although nothing was stolen on that occasion.

However, alcohol, a mobile phone, tobacco and DVDs were taken from a house over the night of January 2 and 3. The thief is said to have struck some time between 10pm and 5.50am.

A week before Christmas another break-in netted a laptop, camera, a Nintendo console, a phone and some jewellery.

This occurred between 10pm on December 18 and 6.40am on December 19.

Two days earlier on December 16 a rucksack and X-box were stolen from another property between 9pm and 11pm on December 16.

The teenager arrested in connection with these offences must return to the Martlesham police investigation centre at Suffolk Constabulary headquarters at March 12.

Anyone with information about the incidents should telephone Suffolk Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
