A MAJOR project to transform the town’s road system is causing traffic chaos today.

Work has today begun on the £21 million Travel Ipswich project to convert the Civic Drive roundabout into a junction controlled by traffic lights.

Work on the junction is due to continue until April next year – although it will be suspended between late November and early January to ease disruption over the Christmas period.

Long queues are already forming today, despite assurances from Travel Ipswich project manager Clive Wilkinson that the work would be timed to cause as little disruption as possible.

  • How on earth can changing a road junction cost £21million? It would be better to spend the money inmproving the cart track otherwise known as the A140

  • What a total and utter waste of money, that could be better used in other ways. Traffic lights stop traffic causing delays whilst a round about (which is already there), means traffic either keeps moving, or at least isn't forced to stop when there is no other trafic unlike trafic lights. No doubt the authorities will take this opportunity to narrow the road at the same time to further enhance the town's anti car policy?

  • I was under the impression the reason for installing roundabouts was because they hold up less traffic than traffic lights. Another planning backward step?? Or simply another opp to install yet more unnecessary lights around this town...time will tell. Watch this space.

  • Terrible idea anyway. It will look better but will make traffic worse so why not spend some of the money on just doing up the current roundabout and surrounding area? It would be cheaper too.
