Police in Ipswich are appealing for information following the incident, which happened at about 2.30pm on Saturday.

The 29-year-old woman was walking through an alleyway leading to Norwich Road off Sherrington Road, in Ipswich, when she became aware of someone near her.

She was then pushed against a wall by a man who held her around her throat and demanded she hand over her mobile phone. The woman said she didn’t have one and managed to struggle free and run off to seek help.

Police carried out a search with a police dog but the man was not found. He is described as white, 20-30 years old, about 5ft 9in, slim with a shaven head.

He had an Eastern European accent and wore a grey T-shirt with wording in a diagonal pattern across the front and dark jogging bottoms.

If you were in the area and saw a man matching this description, or if you witnessed the incident, call Ipswich CID quoting crime number IW/14/2751 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

  • Some parts of this story are incorrect, I know this because it was my partner that was attacked. :( First: it was the first alleyway on the right hand side of Sherrington Road as you come in from Norwich Road. Its leads to the gardens that back onto Norwich Road. Second: She was not walking down the alleyway, she was passing it as she was walking towards Norwich Road, the attacker was hiding in the entrance of the alleyway waiting for his chance. She is from Central Europe herself, hardworking and honest, she feels horrified that people come into this country and behave like that. She is still very shaken and is reminded of what happened due to red scratches down her throat from when she got away. Sarky- I agree, i'm not sure where the paper get their stories from in the first place but maybe if they were correct at time of print the public may be able to help more.

  • Police Direct, an email info service from Suffolk Police, also had the same description of where the alleyway was and if they don't know, how is the Star or public supposed to.

  • Waspie's wife....I echo comments here. It is unnerving to hear of another crime against a woman. I agree with Pandy about the change in that area and I've been racking my brains as to where this alleyway is, as Sarky Sarge says. I've lived her all my life and I don't like what is happening.

  • As for the "east european" description... this escalating crimewave, especially against women for the past few years is rapidly becoming an epidemic in this town.

  • Shame this paper often gets its facts muddled - there is no alleyway leading from Sherrington road to Norwich road. This doesn't help inform the public. I live in the area and will only be too glad to keep an eye out for this thug but it would help to know accurately where to look.

  • "He had an Eastern European accent " How great (not!) it is that Ipswich is now so ethnically diverse - I hope the victim recovers and remembers. The perpetrator sounds like a very nasty piece of work and needs locking up and then deported - permanently.
