Ipswich: Woman in intensive care after rescue from smoke-filled house

12:46 06 December 2012

A WOMAN in her 70s is in intensive care after being rescued from a smoke-filled house in Ipswich late last night.

Paramedics requested help from fire crews after arriving at a 999 call in St Edmunds Road, Ipswich at 11.32pm to find the house of the patient filled with smoke.

Crews from Princes Street and Ipswich East stations attended and found the house lightly smoke logged.

On arrival, the female casualty was out of the property and receiving treatment from the paramedics.

Fire crews located the source of the incident as being smoke fumes from an oil heater external to the house.

The gas and heating supplies to the property have since been isolated to allow fire crews to make the scene safe and for both police and fire investigation teams to establish the cause of the incident.

The woman was taken to hospital for further treatment and is reported to be in intensive care.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called to the premises at 11.40pm, and an ambulance was on scene in about four minutes, closely followed by a paramedic car. The woman, aged in her 70s, was unconscious, and was taken to Ipswich Hospital.”

Police and fire investigation teams are investigating the incident today.
