The leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, Baron Dick Newby, is visiting party members in Suffolk for their annual dinner on Saturday night.

And he will be hoping to persuade new members to work to ensure the party returns to its strong position of 10 years ago.

Lord Newby said: “About two thirds of our members are new to the party and we are growing fast. We now have 100,000 members, only just behind the Conservatives.

“A lot of them are very enthusiastic and we have to harness that. We are rebuilding and there are a lot of people very worried about the impact of Brexit – and at what is happening with the other two political parties.”

He hoped that the dinner on Saturday night would give him the opportunity to encourage more people to become active in the Liberal Democrats and help build a team that can win more seats in council elections and be prepared for the next general election.
