New information boards featuring watercolour paintings have been installed in Long Melford to signpost tourists to attractions and amenities.

Councillor John Nunn, vice chairman of Long Melford Parish Council, has spearheaded the initiative, which has been funded by grants and donations, for three boards at different locations around the village.

Long Melford artist Vernon J Lever has produced the watercolour images which feature on the signs, including scenes of Melford Hall, Kentwell Hall, the church, the Bull Hotel and a street scene. The boards reveal a street map including amenities like cash machines as well as tourist attractions.

Mr Nunn said he came up with the idea about six months ago as he felt Long Melford was lacking in tourist information signs. He added: “I help to run the heritage centre and I’m one of the co-founders of the heritage centre [at the village hall] and I get a lot of people coming in for information on where things are in the village so that’s another reason to have the information boards.”

Mr Nunn, who is also a Babergh District councillor, said he felt Long Melford missed out when it came to tourists. “I do feel the village needs to promote itself more and this is one small way of helping that,” he said. “Lavenham and Sudbury have had these sorts of maps for years and I just feel we have been missing out and this is one way of rectifying that.” He said the companies involved in producing the boards were DL Design Associates in Sudbury, Cubitt Theobald Ltd of Long Melford and Auto Innovations in Sudbury.

Mr Nunn, chairman of the Long Melford Street Fair committee, said 2015 calendars featuring watercolour scenes of the village by Mr Lever would be available to buy at the fair on July 13.
