Lowestoft: Death of man in his 70s near Claremont pier ‘not suspicious’

PUBLISHED: 15:50 23 July 2014 | UPDATED: 21:13 23 July 2014

A man died on the south beach at Lowestoft this lunchtime

The man, who is believed to be in his 70s, was pulled from the sea – to the south of Claremont Pier – by RNLI beach lifeguards.

But despite efforts to resuscitate the man, with the area cordoned off as he was treated, he sadly died.

The Lowestoft and Southwold Coastguard rescue teams were called by Humber Coastguard at 11.30am this morning, following a request for assistance on the south beach.

Police, the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the East of England Ambulance Service were also alerted, and a police spokesman said the man subsequently died in Lowestoft.

RNLI lifeguard supervisor, Sam Kendrick, said: “RNLI Lifeguards at Lowestoft beach recovered an unconscious man from the sea who was spotted floating in the water about 200m outside the lifeguards’ patrol area this morning.

“A lifeguard, using a rescue board, quickly retrieved the man and brought him back to the beach. Lifeguards immediately administered CPR before handing over his medical care to paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service.”

A spokesman for the Lowestoft and Southwold Coastguard rescue teams said four volunteer officers attended “in the rescue of a man out of the water at Claremont Pier” and also to provide cover for the East of England Air Ambulance as it landed on the beach.

A police spokesman added: “We were called by the ambulance service shortly before noon today following reports that a man was seriously ill on the beach off Claremont Pier. Officers attended and found the body of a man, believed to be in his 70s. We are still in the process of establishing his identity, where he lives and identifying the whereabouts of his family.

“At this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
