The alarm was raised at about 9.20pm last night when a 54-year-man contacted Essex Police said he was at the seafront at Walton-on-the-Naze and intended to commit suicide.

The force alerted Thames Coastguard, which said the man had told police he had taken some pills and was intending to walk into the sea.

Police and coastguard searched the area and the man was found in Frinton shortly afterwards. He was taken to hospital.
