It has inspired works of art, acts of war and flying fits of passion.

For one musician from Manningtree, it has also fuelled a nine hour journey on a clapped out motorbike.

Ben Brown undertook the amorous adventure to serenade his girlfriend Krista Lynch after she complained he had not visited her at home in Brighton.

Not wishing to disappoint, the 24-year-old musician set off secretly on his 1971 Honda C70, with “no map, mobile phone or real idea where [he] was going”.

With the bike managing a top speed of 30mph “when it’s going down hill with the wind behind”, the 120 mile journey was always likely to take some time.

But with wrong turns, a missed ferry connection and a perilous crossing of the Dartford Bridge, it soon grew beyond what Mr Brown had expected.

“I was kind of excited by the idea when I first set off,” he said.

“But in hindsight I kind of think it was more stupid than anything else.”

After nine hours on the roads and a surreal encounter with a low-flying owl, Mr Brown finally arrived in Brighton.

But at 2am, with his girlfriend sound asleep, the adventure was not yet over.

Climbing four storeys of scaffolding to reach her window, Mr Brown, who performs in Suffolk and Essex under the name Mick Squalor, took out his guitar and sang a song he had composed for her on Valentine’s Day.

“When she came to the window to let me in, she was crying - I think it was tears of joy,” he said.

“She’s been telling all her friends how romantic it was but I think there’s a fine line between romance and foolishness.”

While admitting the journey was “reckless”, Mr Brown said he would “probably do it again”.

Sadly, Mr Brown’s trusty C70 will not be travelling with him, as it was stolen early this morning, before he was due to head back to Manningtree.

“I was pretty annoyed, but I suppose it was quite a funny end to the story,” he said.
