A teenage rider injured after her horse fell on her is recovering at home after suffering serious crush injuries.

Student Alice Tilbury, 18, of Wetheringsett suffered a broken ankle, an injured knee, and a possible fractured bone in her leg after her horse Hobnob fell on top of her on Saturday morning.

She also hit her head while falling off the horse, which slipped after seeing four other horses nearby. He did not rear up.

Alice was airlifted to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital because paramedics and a doctor from the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service felt her injuries may have been even more serious.

Miss Tilbury said there had been some confusion immediately after the accident because she told people who came to help that she had suffered a broken pelvis in an earlier accident, and there had been fears this could mean she had internal injuries.

She was eventually allowed to return home later on Saturday after scans – but has to return to hospital for further treatment.

She was anxious to explain that the other horses were not at fault in any way: “My horse saw them and is unfamiliar with the area. He went towards them and slipped over, coming down on top of me. I hit my head as I fell as well.”

Miss Tilbury said she would have been killed in the accident had she not been wearing a sturdy helmet.

The photography student is likely to be recovering at home for some time, and has deferred her studies until September.

Her horse suffered minor injuries, but nothing serious: “He’s all right, I understand, but it will be some time before I can ride again,” she said.
