It’s set to be an occasion to remember for those attending an annual charity race night at Newmarket next month.

And the event is set to raise thousands of pounds for a good cause and one that is close to the organiser’s heart.

The evening is in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care and is being held for the fifth time, with last year’s event raising £30,000.

Guests will be able to dine in style in the Champions Gallery, on the Rowley Mile Course, on Thursday, May 15, view the racing and have the chance to bid for one of the glittering prizes on offer.

Organised by Richard Lindsey, a member of the hospice’s special events committee, it is hoped the evening will match last year’s fundraising total.

He got involved following the death of his brother Charles, 76, who suffered with prostate cancer and was cared for by the Bury St Edmunds-based hospice who took his brother “under their wing”.

Mr Lindsey said: “They organised everything for him and his family and were fantastic. He spent the final days of his life in the hospice and it will be five years ago this month that he died.

“I just wanted to try and repay the hospice for all they had done for my brother and said that I would like to join the committee as a way of paying them back and I took on the race night and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

The event is one of the three main fundraising events organised for the hospice annually. Last year it included the Classic and Sports Car by the Lake in Fordham St Martin, which this year takes place on Sunday, August 31, and the opera Madame Butterly, which was staged at The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds.

Some of the raffle prizes on offer include a stay in a Cornish cottage for four people; entry to the Premier Enclosure and table of four in the Champions Stand at Newmarket Racecourse; a private tour of Shadwell Stud, near Thetford, for up to six people; a voucher for a pamper day at Clarice House; a trip to Newmarket Gallops and breakfast at the Jockey Club; two signed books from Delia Smith; tickets to the historic Masters’ Festival at Brands Hatch, on May 25; and a tailored suit from Trotter and Deane.

Tickets for the evening cost £70 per person and can be booked by contacting Mr Lindsey on 07803 200035 or email rgl67@btinternet.com
