Nominations roll in for Stars of Suffolk awards - but still time to enter

Unsung community heroes from across Suffolk are set to have their outstanding bravery, contributions to society and dedication to others recognised in the county’s annual awards ceremony.
Nominations are still open for the annual awards, launched 10 years ago to celebrate those who make their communities a better place to be a part of.
The 13 categories for 2017 were officially launched in April, and include community champion, volunteer of the year, police hero and sporting achievement.
While there has been a steady stream of nominations, award founder Mick Parker is keen to see more people put forward.
“We started the awards because we wanted to recognise people from all walks of life, all ages, all interests,” he said. “That’s why we have got a comprehensive list of 13 categories, which cover anybody and everybody from the emergency services through to the armed forces, community champions and young persons. People can be and will be recognised. Please get your nominations in because the awards are going to be amazing.”
Since their creation, the Stars of Suffolk awards have recognised more than 600 members of the community.
Mr Parker said it was a great feeling to inform people they had been shortlisted for an award.
“They are completely bowled over,” he said. “People can’t believe they have been nominated.
“When you call them or write to them and say they are a finalist it takes a while for that to sink in, the fact that they have been selected from probably 100 people.
“It’s a shock, people just find it incredible, because they don’t see what they’re doing as anything out of the ordinary. It’s a very emotional evening and one that people remember forever.”
All nominations will be put before a panel of judges and a shortlist of three finalists in each category will be drawn up.
Each finalist will be invited to attend the Stars of Suffolk ceremony, being held at Trinity Park on Thursday, November 9, with the winners receiving a special prize tailored to their interests.
Nominations close on Friday, October 13. The judging panel will decide the finalists on October 23.
