A woman in her 70s died and an elderly man suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash on the Norfolk and Suffolk border.

Emergency services were called to the crash, involving three cars, on the A143 at Ellingham, near Bungay, at about 1.45pm on Friday.

The vehicles in the crash were a Vauxhall Meriva, a Renault Scenic and a Ford Focus.

A woman in her 70s, who had been a passenger in the Meriva, had been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, but died of her injuries.

A man in his 80s, who was driving the Meriva was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with life-threatening injuries by the East Anglian Air Ambulance, where his condition was described as critical but stable.

A second male who had been driving the Renault Scenic, was taken to N&N with minor injuries while a female passenger in this vehicle was uninjured.

The female driver of the Focus suffered a suspected broken arm and was taken to the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston for treatment. She was alone in the vehicle.

The collision took place close to Ellingham and the road remained closed until around 6pm.

Firefighters from Loddon, Bungay, Beccles, Carrow and Harleston went to the scene and used special equipment to free the casualties.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who believes they may have seen any of the vehicles prior to the collision or witnessed the incident itself.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Robert Hardingham or the Serious Collision Investigation Team (SCIT) on 101.
