Drivers using one of the busiest roads in Ipswich will face six weeks of disruption from Monday after utility company Cadent starts work to replace an old gas main.

Temporary traffic lights will control vehicles near the railway bridge over the road and the junctions with Cromer, Kelvin and Lister Roads will be closed to traffic for four weeks.

The work will also disrupt Ipswich Buses services nine and ten which serve the Whitton and Castle Hill estates.

The road closures are due to be lifted from February 2, but the temporary traffic lights are expected to stay in place until February 12.

Cadent, which was formerly National Grid Gas, says it is replacing an old iron gas main with a new more durable plastic main which will be more reliable and should be able to operate safely for many years.

A diversion for local traffic is being set up – and letters have been sent to households explaining the work.
