We’ve hit the 1970s in the latest instalment of our chronological look through the Star picture archives.

Today we are remembering the first year of that decade and hope that these pictures spark some happy memories.

Meanwhile, Star reader Doug Winney, of Heatherhayes, Ipswich, wrote in after a nostalgia picture we published last week, below, provoked some recollections.

He writes: “With reference to the photographs from 1969, I am able to throw light on the one relating to the Nicholian Youth Club Dinner in April of that year.

“It was actually an end of season dinner held by the football section of the Nicholians Youth Centre in Station Street, Ipswich, at a restaurant in the Buttermarket which, like the youth centre, no longer exists.

“The three main ladies featured were Maureen Eley, Margaret Winney and Barbara Want who were the wives of club officials. Also there were Arthur Eley (assistant secretary), Doug Winney (secretary, also know as Scribe ‘Old Nich’) and Harry Wand (first aid and spongeman), who was missing on the photograph and who may have taken the picture.

“At the end of this 1968/1969 season Nicholians continued their rise up the leagues finishing top of Section B of the IDL Division 2, dropping only one point from 22 matches and scoring 99 goals to finish 11 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Old Newton in their section and then beating Foxhall Works, winners of Section A, in the play offs and gaining promotion to Division 1.”

Thanks for your letter, Doug, and, as ever, if you have any memories you wish to share with Star readers, drop us a line at the addresses below and we’ll feature your contributions at a later date.
