A 31-year-old Ipswich man has been given a conditional discharge after admitting resisting arrest.

Aminur Rahman, of Alderman Road, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Ipswich magistrates. The incident occurred on January 3.

Prosecutor Colette Harper said police attended Rahman’s address in Alderman Road following reports of an incident.

Rahman was initially arrested on suspicion of another matter. However, when an officer took hold of Rahman’s wrist to put handcuffs on him he started to pull away.

The court was told Rahman became aggressive, shouting and lashing out at a police officer.

He was Pava-sprayed as the officer tried to subdue him, but continued to resist arrest.

Other officers came to their colleague’s assistance as efforts were made to apply the handcuffs to Rahman’s wrist.

However, he was kicking out so he was Pava-sprayed for a second time.

Magistrates heard Rahman had 36 previous offences on record, including two assaults on police and one of obstructing a Pc.

Jeremy Kendall, representing Rahman, said his client’s convictions tend to come in batches.

The court was told Rahman was battling an alcohol problem.

Police were originally called to the home after an allegation of criminal damage to a flower pot. In addition to a six-month conditional discharge Rahman was order to pay £15 to the victims’ fund and £30 costs.
