A pedestrian who was involved in a collision with a car on the A14 near Bury St Edmunds in the early hours of this morning has died.

Emergency services were called shortly before 2.15am to the westbound carriageway between junction 43 for the A143 Compiegne Way and junction 42 for the B1106 Tut Hill.

A Suffolk police spokeswoman said the incident had involved a pedestrian and a blue Peugeot 306 car.

A Suffolk police spokesman said the pedestrian – a man in his 20s – was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Peugeot driver was unharmed.

A spokesman from Suffolk Accident Rescue Service confirmed one of its volunteer doctors attended alongside paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service.

An ambulance service spokesman said: “An ambulance crew was on scene in three minutes followed by two response cars, Suffolk Accident Rescue Service and a response car from Magpas Air Ambulance were dispatched.

“Despite their best efforts a man in his 20s died at the scene.

“Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.”

Police cordoned off the road while a full investigation got underway and recovery took place, re-opening again at 7.15am.

A detour was in operation exiting the road at junction 43 and travelling via the A143 south, the A1302 westbound through Risbygate and rejoining the A14 at junction 42 while the stretch of A14 was closed.

Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or anyone who has information which can help police in their investigation – including those with dash cams fitted who were driving through the area – to get in contact by calling 101.
