Town centre traders in Ipswich have today called for free parking areas in Lower Brook Street to be extended to one hour – a move they claim will boost trade.

A petition signed by businesses in Tacket Street, Upper Brook Street, Lower Brook Street and Dogs Head Street pleading for the change has been sent to Suffolk County Council.

In a letter to the authority, the traders have said the current 30 minute limit does not give people enough time to do their shopping.

The letter states: “With the prohibitive parking charges in Ipswich and the decline in trade in the town it would make a huge difference to shoppers to the area.”

Aziz Kadir, the owner of T C Barber Shop, in Tacket Street, helped to set up the petition and he believes that changing the time limit would be a major boost to both shoppers and traders.

He said: “It’s not enough time – it’s a silly amount of time to be honest.

“We are trying to say to them that one hour would make sense – it would give people time to do something.”

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said: “As with any petition we will, of course, look at it once we’ve received it.”
