Police were called to an incident involving a young group of males chasing at least one other young man through Sainsbury’s in Ipswich town centre this afternoon.

Early reports at the scene suggested at least one member of the group was carrying a knife, but police have said this has not been confirmed.

One of the people involved in the incident had a blood stain on his clothing, police said.

There were no injuries but it is understood a member of staff was pushed to the floor.

A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said: “Police were called to the Sainsbury’s store in Lower Brook Street, Ipswich, just after 4.35pm, to reports a group of males had run through the shop, possibly in pursuit of one or more other males, all of whom appeared to be in their late teens to 20s.

“No weapons were seen but at least one of the individuals appeared to have a blood stain on his clothing. Officers immediately attended but the males had all left the store.

“At this stage it’s not clear what may have happened but police are making enquiries to trace those involved and to gather witness accounts. Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk police on 101, quoting CAD number 331 of today, Thursday June 15.”

Early reports also suggested a young man being chased escaped by running out of the back of the store’s warehouse, while the group left through one of the fire exits.

It is believed the chase continued in Dogs Head Street.

According to one witness, blood was also seen on the floor inside the store.

Police were still at the scene at 5.30pm.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident and are working with the police on this matter”
