WATERFRONT: Town residents have voiced their concerns after a coffin appeared in a hearse parked on the quayside.
The vintage vehicle, which belong to tattoo company Diablo Ink, has been a common sight on the Waterfront for more than a year, however in recent weeks residents have noticed that a new hearse had parked up with a coffin on board.
Elizabeth Green, 22, of Ipswich, said she thought the coffin was out of taste.
“I think it is awful,” she said. “If my children turn around and ask me what it is – they will be scared if I say it is a coffin.
“I just think it is disturbing.”
Lorna Grey, 18, said she thought it was “extremely odd”.
Texola von Diablo, owner of Diablo Ink, told The Evening Star that the hearse was meant to be “light-hearted”.
He said: “I got my first hearse more than a year ago, and now I have a new one too, that is the one with the coffin inside.
“I think people shouldn’t be disturbed by it, there are more disturbing things in the town centre.
“It is promotional, everywhere it goes people are talking about it.
“I have had two or three negatives comments about it but on the whole it has all been positive.
“It is meant to be a bit tongue in cheek and light-hearted. At the end of the day, I am keeping a classic car on the road.”
He revealed the newest hearse will soon be completed by funeral flowers spelling out ‘Elvis’,
Temporary Sergeant Nick Rush from Ipswich Central Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “We have not received any complaints about this issue but we are aware of it.
“The vehicle is parked away from residential properties but if any members of the public have any concerns then please call Ipswich Central SNT on 101.”

The only offensive vehicle I've seen in Ipswich is the free bus for council emplyees we all pay for running around empty. We should be applauding Tex for a fantastic marketing idea for a small local business.

Will someone please tell me why you need a hearse and coffin to avertise a tattoo shop. You could just get David Beckham to stand there all day. At a small fee.

Look at the very next story - a stabbing in Ipswich! And still somehow you manage to make a story about a wooden box in the back of car! clearly some people need to prioritise - what would be more terrifying for Miss Greens children? Explaining that some people enjoy authentic classic cars including a coffin (lets hope she never has to walk them past a funeral directors) or why that man over there in laying in a pool of his own blood??

Why on earth would children be "scared". I bet they watch much more scary (and worrying!) things on TV, phones, games machines etc. Time for some young adults to grow up methinks!

Why would anybody be scared of a hearse, perhaps parents should talk with their children and explain that it is a quirky innotive way of up cycling a classic car! Well done tex, get the Diablo graphics on the hearse to stop the Ipswich residents being "afraid" of a car, so they understand it's just fun. I heard Diablo hosts the greatest tattoo artists going... Go team tex!!!!!

Why would children be scared of an empty coffin? I do think the attitude towards death in this country is really odd. Death shouldn't be something scary it happens to us all, and I would have thought that the hearse and empty coffin would be an ideal opportunity to broach the subject with children. I was 4 when my last grandparent died, she had been in a coma for several weeks, so it was a gentle introduction to the concept of death, and I really appreciate now that my parents gave me the opportunity to say good bye. I really do think people should find soemthing real to worry about rather than a hearse sporting an empty coffin. there are much bigger issues going on in this town country word.

It is, perhaps, a reflection on the state of Ipswich town centre, the one that Paul Geater and the Mayor so avidly support !!!!!!

I've seen it. It has contact details for the tattoo parlour on the windows. I think it unlikely anybody would mistake it for a real hearse, whose driver has gone off for a jolly while carrying a loaded coffin. It might be slightly off colour taste wise, but it is hardly outrageous. I am more offended by the drunks outside the Odeon. Though, of course, this incident is on the towns precious waterfront. The only part of town that seems to matter these days.

Perhaps someone ordered the coffin so they can bury the Borough Council's self-indulgent ambitions for the Waterfront area.

People are getting up in arms over a wooden box in the back of a beautiful classic car? It's hardly like there's a body in it, all he's doing is building a memorial to the King, nothing wrong with that in my eyes, it's not that much different than an actual funeral, or putting flowers on a loved ones resting place, and he's damn right, there's far more disturbing things in this town, than a car doing exactly what it's designed to do. Good on him for having the balls to be different.
