All Star Wrestling wowed fans on Friday night

All Star Wrestling wowed fans on Friday night

Some of Britain’s finest wrestlers caused mayhem in the Corn Exchange in Ipswich on Friday night.

Children and parents were off their seats throughout the night as sports entertainers took battle in the squared circle.

The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the tag-team match – and the penultimate bout of the show – which featured The ‘UK Hooligans’. The pair, who claimed they were from Ipswich, arguably showed the most wrestling prowess with superb aerial moves and lighting-fast tandem action.

However the first half of the card was slow to get going with a lack of action and excitement in the ring as the wrestlers focussed their efforts on engaging the crowd.

But each match was at the very least entertaining as the vocal crowd were always letting their feelings known to both wrestlers.

The older fans who were treated to an incredible show in October when the All Star Wrestling (ASW) last visited would have a case for feeling a little underwhelmed, though.

The main event back then was a four-man battle (featuring the UK Hooligans) inside a steel cage, lasting around 30 minutes and worthy of a spot on any World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) main event.

Tonight, children were the targeted audience for the final match. It was the 3ft 6in hero, Mark ‘Little Legs’ Sealey whose David vs Goliath performance brought a smile to dozens of children but would have left the more seasoned wrestling fans somewhat disappointed.

Sealey was no match for the cocky Blackpool Blonde, who was subjected to hurls of abuse and humiliation as he was suplexed and made a fool of by the fighting duo of ‘Little Legs’ and his patriotic partner.

But overall, it was classic family entertainment.

It may be 50 years since Sir Alf Ramsey’s England team won the World Cup - and even longer since he led Ipswich to win the First Division title in their debut season - but affection for the man and what he achieved remains undimmed in his adopted county of Suffolk.

In the Middle Ages Ipswich was not without schools, there is firm evidence of a grammar school as early as 1477 and probably as far back as 1399. This school received its Charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1566 and went through a number of guises before it became, what is now, Ipswich School. The school buildings are on Henley Road but have previously been in Foundation Street and Blackfriars Monastery.
