Police had to close a busy road this evening after fire swept across a large area of heathland.
Thick grey smoke from the blaze was drifting in the wind and reduced visibilty to dangerous levels for drivers using Woodbridge Road between the outskirts of Ipswich and Kesgrave.
It was so dense in places that police decided for safety reasons to close the road until it cleared.
Firefighters were called to Rushmere Heath to deal with the fire at 7.12pm.
They found a large area of undergrowth alight – around 2,500 sq metres of gorse – near the 17th fairway of the golf course.
Two crews from Princes Street and one from Ipswich East attended.
One driver said: “We could see flames in places and the fire crews were very busy dealing with it.
“It was very windy, too, and the smoke was blowing straight across the road, making driving conditions difficult.”
Earlier firefighters had dealt with a skip alight at The Street, Rushmere St Andrew.
A crew from Ipswich East were in the area at the time the call came in at 12.09pm and were dispatched to deal with it.
They found a skip well alight along with a small unattended bonfire and used one water jet to extinguish the fire. They were back at base by 1.10pm.
