The Luton-based carrier, which is also a major operator at Stansted, reported a 4.8% year-on-year increase in passengers during March, sending its shares around 2% higher.

It flew 5.1million passengers during the month, taking its rolling annual total for the year to March 31 to 61.83m, a 3.5% increase on the previous 12 months.

Yesterday, rival no-frills carrier Ryanair, the largest operator at Stansted, announced that it carried 5.2m passengers in March 2014, a 4% dip on its March 2013 figure.

However, the total of 81.7m passengers carried by Ryanair in the 12 months ending March 2014 still represented a 3% increase on the previous 12 months,

Both Ryanair and easyJet are among airlines to have signed new agreements with Stansted owner Manchester Airports Group to expand their operations at the airport.
