FIRE crews have tackled an early morning blaze at a flat above a shop in Stowmarket.

The fire service was called to the property in IPswich Street at just before 3am and crews from Stowmarket and Needham Market fire stations were sent to the scene.

They arrived to find the flat well alight but all occupants had been accounted for and everyone was safe.

The fire was brought under control by firefighters using a hose reel and a Multistar aerial ladder platform unit from Bury St Edmunds was called to check for any fire on the roof of the property.

The flames were out by 5am and crews had returned to their bases by 6.12am.
