The final preparations are being made for a town’s carnival which the organisers expect will attract thousands of visitors.

More than 30 groups will be involved with the Stowmarket Carnival procession when it makes its way through the town centre on Saturday.

The line-up will be organised at PPG Industries, a global supplier in paint in the town, before going off at 12.30pm.

Carnival chairman Justine Margetson said: “I think its going really well, I am looking forward to having Augustus the horse here who played the younger Joey in War Horse, the Hollywood film.

“He is in the procession and doing a meet and greet. There will be a competition for the children to draw a picture of him.

“Hopefully with good weather I am sure we will get more than we had last year; it’s growing by the year.”

Following the procession, on Sunday there will be car, pet and dog shows all on the carnival’s headquarters on the Recreation Ground which Mrs Margetson’s 17-year-old daughter, Felicity, has been helping to organise.

Also on the Saturday will be arena acts including live music in the evening. Displays by groups including the Mid Suffolk Gymnastics Club and the Sara-Anne School of Dance will also feature.

Registration for the pet show begins from 11am on the Sunday, with the judging starting at 11.30am. Registration for the dog show starts at 1pm, with judging from 2pm.

Earlier in the year the organisers confirmed they had raised enough funds for this year’s event. In previous years committees have had to work hard to ensure the events have been able to go ahead.

Thousands of pounds were raised this year through sponsorship.

Mrs Margetson said: “People have been really helpful sponsoring things, for the children’s craft tent PPG are the sponsors, the animal petting zone is sponsored by Greens Removals. Augustus is sponsored by Gladwells countryside store.”
