Teen sentenced for burglaries

A 16-year-old boy has been sentenced to eight months in a young offender’s institution for burgling homes in Stowmarket.

The teenager, from Ringshall, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to two burglaries in Bond Street, where a digital camera, Apple iPad, keys and an amount of cash were stolen from a property on February 19, just a few days after a floodlight and an iPhone were stolen during a break-in.

The teenager was sentenced to eight months detention in a young offender’s institution at Bury Youth Court yesterday.

The sentence also takes into consideration 14 additional offences, including 13 burglaries in Bond Street, Temple Road, Lockington Crescent, Beech Terrace, Bury Road, and one offence of criminal damage to a greenhouse in Lockington Crescent. All of the offences happened in Stowmarket between February 14 and 19.

The additional offences were taken into consideration as part of the Suffolk Constabulary’s Operation Converter, which encourages offenders to admit crimes, which are then taken into consideration at sentencing.

Mid Suffolk local policing commander, Inspector Tristan Pepper said: “This teenage boy caused a local community an immense amount of distress and misery by focussing on a number of nearby streets over an intense week period. It makes it worse that he is only 16-years-old.

“Tackling burglary is a key priority for Suffolk Police and we are committed to reducing the number of crimes and taking positive action against those responsible.”
