Cordials have been bottled, ice cream lovingly churned and sauces jarred in preparation for a summer food festival which exceeded all expectations when it launched last summer.

The inaugural Taste of Sudbury proved so popular that organisers were inundated with requests from local food and drink producers keen to repeat the success and take a stall at this year’s event on Sunday, June 22.

Among them are Wheldon’s fruit farm, from Newton Leys near Sudbury, Lavenham Brook Vineyard and Hadleys Dairy from Colne Engaine near Halstead.

Also getting involved in the event for the second year in a row are Copella Fruit Juices of Boxford, and Scutchers bistro of Long Melford, among many others.

A brochure has now been produced giving details of the demonstrations that will take place on a specially constructed stage outside St Peter’s Church. The brochure – available from the Tourist Information Centre at Sudbury Library – also lists the many attractions planned to coincide with the festival.

The idea of the festival is to showcase the local produce available in and around the Sudbury area and to encourage visitors to the town.

Co-organiser Jane Hatton, who said she was bowled over by the success of the first Taste of Sudbury, hopes it will one day rival bigger, more established events such as the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival.

Mark Bills, director of Gainsborough’s House, said staff and volunteers were delighted to be taking part in the event again.

He added: “It’s a great way to bring people into this fabulous town and we look forward to welcoming visitors to Gainsborough’s House throughout the day to enjoy the Georgian chocolate tasting sessions.”

Mark David, from the Cooking Experience, will compere all of the on-stage cookery demonstrations and young ace guitarist Adam Chinery and his band the Magic Bus will perform live from 4.30pm.

On the day, a park and ride service will operate from Delphi Car Park in Newton Road, starting at 10.45am, with a free bus departing every 15 minutes. The bus with wheelchair access will drop visitors off outside the Town Hall, where the last bus will leave from at 6pm. There will be no buses between 2pm and 3pm. For those choosing to drive to the event, all car parks in Sudbury will be free on the day.
