Suffolk/Essex: Firefighters resume strike action at 2pm today

PUBLISHED: 13:51 03 May 2014

Firefighters across Suffolk and north Essex are back on strike this afternoon as part of a second day of national action.

Today’s 12-hour strike starts at 2pm and is the longest period of action over this weekend. Strike action was held between noon-5pm yesterday and is due between 10am-3pm tomorrow.

The strike action is over an ongoing dispute between the Fire Brigades Union and the government over pensions.

Both Suffolk Fire and Rescue and Service (SFRS) and Essex County Fire & Rescue Service (ECFRS) insist they have strong resilience measures in place, and people should call 999 as normal to report a fire.

An ECFRS spokesman said: “You should continue to dial 999 in an emergency and working Essex crews will respond. But you can help us to help you by being safer, slower and more vigilant during periods of industrial action this weekend.

“The public should be reassured that Essex has strong resilience arrangements in place to keep communities safe.

“But it might be worth treating yourself to that Saturday night takeaway and keeping out of the kitchen, where a significant number of fires start, particularly after a night out.”

A spokesman from SFRS added: “Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service are encouraging everyone to be extra vigilant at these times, as we will have reduced fire and rescue cover, and take extra care during strike periods.”
