The funeral of a well-know Suffolk landlady had to be switched to her own pub after it became impossible to reach the local church because of Thursday’s snow.

Breda Smith, landlady of the Sorrell Horse at Barham, died at the end of January at the age of 65 just a month after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Her son Matthew said Thursday’s funeral had been due to take place at Barham church – but just 90 minutes before the service was due to start he was told it would not be possible to reach the building.

He said: “It was suggested it could he held here at the pub. We already had a marquee up for the wake and so we quickly got everything arranged. The Vicar came here and it all went well.

“My mother had run the pub for more than 30 years and she was so well-known, it seemed very appropriate.”

The pub stays in the family, run by Mr Smith and his brother Philip. Mrs Smith also leaves her partner Malcolm (Dick) Dickerson.
