POLICE are hunting a prolific burglar wanted on recall to prison for breaching the terms of his licence.

Officers are asking the public for help in tracing 25-year-old Daniel Beresford, who is known to frequent Ipswich and the Suffolk Coastal area, and was jailed for four years in July 2010.

At his sentencing Ipswich Crown Court heard Beresford netted thousands of pounds worth of stolen property during 11 raids at homes around Suffolk.

The heroin addict’s burglary spree was ended with a dramatic police chase during which he collided with a car as he overtook a slow-moving bus.

Beresford - who lived in Handel Walk, Colchester, at the time - admitted three burglaries and dangerous driving. He also asked for eight offences of burglary to be considered.

Judge John Holt said Beresford had been sentenced in 2008 to a three-year prison sentence for house burglaries and had been out on licence when he committed the 2010 offences.

Michael Crimp, prosecuting said Beresford had broken-into a house in Bredfield and had stolen jewellery and coins.

He was seen by police officers driving a Renault Laguna in Saddlemakers Lane, Melton, but reversed at speed and drove off along the A12 towards Woodbridge.

At one stage the car had overtaken a slow-moving bus in Pytches Road, Woodbridge, and had been met head-on by a car driven by an elderly lady.

Beresford had driven half on to the kerb in a bid to pass the car but had collided with the near-side of the vehicle causing £1,000 of damage, said Mr Crimp.

Shortly afterwards Beresford had cut across the path of an oncoming lorry in what a policeman described as an “extremely dangerous manoeuvre”.

After losing sight of the car officers had eventually come across it in Victoria Road and had arrested Beresford.

He had previously burgled premises in Aldeburgh, Iken, Edwardstone, Hoo, Grundisburgh and Swilland.

Beresford is described as white, 6ft tall, of medium to stocky build, with a cross tattoo on his right arm. He has short brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information about Beresford should telephone 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
