In a poll carried out by The Star, not one of the 15 people asked could name Suffolk’s police and crime commissioner (PCC), Tim Passmore.

This result follows a national survey by the Electoral Reform Society, which found that out of 1,000 people, almost 90% couldn’t name their PCC.

Just 11% knew who their elected PCC was, with the society’s report saying November’s PCC elections had “failed both candidates and voters alike”.

Conservative candidate, Mr Passmore, beat Labour’s Jane Basham only after second preference votes were counted, in an election which saw just 16% of the county go to the polls.

In its report, the campaign group claimed people were “left in the dark about who they could vote for”, while the turnout was reduced because the election was held in the winter.

Mr Passmore criticised the Government’s handling of the elections at the time and said he was doing his best to raise awareness of his role.

He said: “The big thing is to make people aware what the role is about and that’s something we need to work on over the next two years.

“We’ve got a website which is updated regularly and we’ll be holding four meetings a year in each district and borough.

“I’m doing what I can, but we’ll keep going. I’m not in any way complacent.”
