Former No 10 spin doctor Andy Coulson has been moved from Belmarsh prison to Hollesley Bay open prison in Suffolk, according to The Times.

Weeks after he was convicted of phone hacking, Coulson, who is serving an 18-month sentence, left the high security facility in southeast London yesterday, according to Neville Thurlbeck, his former employee and cellmate, The Times has reported.

The newspaper said that it is understood that Coulson, the former communications adviser of Prime Minister David Cameron, is now being held at Hollesley Bay, the minimum security jail with seven residential units on an 85-acre site near Woodbridge.

The Ministry of Justice said it would not comment on the whereabouts of individual prisoners. A spokesman said he could not confirm or deny the report that Coulson had moved to Hollesley Bay.

The Times said Thurlbeck, a former chief reporter at the now defunct Sunday newspaper, who was released from Belmarsh last month after serving 37 days of a six-month sentence for his role in the phone hacking scandal, tweeted yesterday: “I’m delighted to report Andy Coulson has now been moved to an open prison. My thoughts are with him and his family.”

Coulson was jailed in July after he was convicted of conspiracy to hack phones after a lengthy trial at the Old Bailey.

His co-defendants Rebekah Brooks and managing editor Stuart Kuttner denied any wrongdoing and were cleared of all charges.

Hacking victims included the family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, sports stars, a whole host of celebrities and members of the Royal Family.
