A member of the public alerted Cambridgeshire Police to the incident at junction 35 near Stow-cum-Quy at around 9am on Sunday.

The eight-year-old was taken to Addenbrooke’s with life-threatening injuries along with the driver, a woman, who suffered minor injuries.

The boy, from the Suffolk area, died later in hospital.

The pair were travelling in a maroon Mazda2 which left the road and collided with a tree.

A police spokesperson said: “An eight-year-old boy from Suffolk was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital where he later died.

“The driver of the car, a woman, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Addenbrooke’s.”

The force did not release any information about the possible cause of the crash.
