Drivers have been getting trapped in floods across much of Suffolk, especially in western parts.

Four cars have been stuck between Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill. Seven people were rescued, including a 10-year-old child believed to be boy. No injuries have been reported.

Fire chiefs are warning drivers not to drive through flood water and to find alternative routes.

There is also flooding in Horringer and Elmswell.

North Essex appears to have had less wet weather overnight but police are still warning drivers to take care.

  • I hope these idiots are being made to pay the cost of their rescue. I don't see why the taxpayer should have to cough up for their imbecility.

  • Why oh why do idiot motorists drive through floodwater. If you cannot see how deep it is let alone some other idiot driving through a deep flood turn around and find an alternative route. Hence those of us who are sensible end up paying inflated insurance premiums for those who lack common sense. Rant over.

  • The picture above of the Sprinter van clearly shows the way not to drive through flood water, if you find that you have to. Far too much water in a maelstrom in front of the vehicle. Having assessed the depth and flow and checked for hidden obstructions, entry should be made slowly, ideally in bottom gear (4X4 vehicles can engage low box and 4wd), building just enough forward momentum to produce a 'bow -wave' which has the effect of pushing the water up in front of the vehicle, keeping engine bay water level lower and the exhaust above water level. Picture below shows much lower depth behind front bumper.
