Gritters have been hard at work

COUNCIL bosses have reassured motorists that gritters have been busy treating the county’s icy roads despite a series of crashes this morning.

It comes after criticism that Suffolk’s roads were dangerous due to snowfall and icy conditions overnight and this morning.

One man said: “I have driven to Norwich this morning using the A140. The Suffolk stretch, particularly around Eye and Diss, is lethal.

“As soon as I crossed the ‘border’ into Norfolk roads were fine. Did Suffolk County Council fail to send out the gritters last night?”

A Suffolk County Council spokesman confirmed all priority one routes - including A and B routes - were gritted at 4pm and 8pm yesterday.

He said: “Priority one and two routes and other main roads, bus routes and roads around schools were gritted at around 3am this morning and our gritters are out again.

“The issue is that the rain and other water washes the grit away so it’s often a case of treating the road and re-treating and re-treating again to keep the grit on the road.

“A total of 45 gritters are out all over the county to keep routes passable.”

Suffolk police revealed a total of 65 traffic-relateed crashes were reported between 6am and 11am today in comparison to 20 accidents during the same period last Friday.

Forecasters are warniing that conditions will remain cold and icy with snow flurries through to Wednesday.
