Increasing numbers of chimney fires across Suffolk have prompted the fire service to issue renewed safety advice.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue has recommended that chimney are swept regularly, cleaned, and well maintained.

“All chimneys and flue-ways should be cleaned and checked during the summer months to ensure they are free from debris and in full working order before the heating season,” a spokesman said.

“A blocked or defective chimney can cause both chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisonings so it’s very important to employ a professional qualified Chimney Sweep such as those certified by NACS.”

Households are also being urged to always use a fire guard and to ensure fires are extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house.
