Former cabinet minister and Suffolk Coastal MP Lord Deben has given his backing to county council leader Mark Bee as he seeks to fend off a challenge from fellow cabinet member Colin Noble.

Lord Deben, who was formerly John Gummer, said: “I think Mark has been quite a remarkable leader of the council. He has been remarkably successful when you look at Suffolk’s achievements over the last three years – and he has been very active.

“He really gets about all over the county involving as many people as possible in the work of the county.”

Lord Deben said that Suffolk County Council was now widely admired in Westminster as a model local authority: “That isn’t something that has been the case in the past, whoever has been in control! I am frankly surprised and disappointed to see that some people think this is now the time to cause problems for Mark.”

Lord Deben’s endorsement came after Mr Bee received backing from most of the county’s MPs and the majority of Conservative group leaders on Suffolk district councils.

The campaign will come to a head at Thursday’s annual general meeting of the Suffolk County Council Conservative group.
