WET and windy conditions are forecast for Suffolk this weekend after blustery weather overnight on Thursday felled trees across the county.

Police were called to 15 incidents related to high winds – mostly fallen trees blocking roads – and have issued words of advice for people driving in adverse weather.

A force spokesman said: “Watch out for debris in the road and surface water and large puddles. Slow down, especially on countries roads when you don’t know what is round the corner. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front in case they need to break quickly for unexpected items on the road.

“If you see something in the road that you can move safely then stop, put your hazards on and if necessary call Suffolk Police on 101.”

Forecaster Jim Bacon at Norwich-based Weatherquest said that the turbulent weather of Thursday evening and Friday morning had been down to an active cold front that moved east overnight and was now over France.

The weekend’s wet and windy conditions will be caused by an area of low pressure heading up from north-western Spain. Mr Bacon said: “The low will come to us late on Saturday.

“It will be a wet and windy evening and night into Sunday morning. Rainfall totals could be quite substantial – about 10-15millimetres.

“It will move away on Sunday morning and give us a nice bright afternoon.”

Conditions over the next following few days will remain wet and windy at times, before temperatures drop considerably at the end of next week.
