Suffolk: Public meeting debates proposed changes to middle schools

PARENTS, councillors and teachers attended a meeting which discussed Suffolk County Council’s controversial plans to move to two-tier schooling.
The meeting, at Cedars Hotel, Stowmarket, was organised by Suffolk Action for Truth on SOR, which is calling on the council to pause its Schools Organisation Review in the Stowmarket and Stowupland area.
The group argues the council does not have enough money to properly fund the changes which will see three middle schools in the area close.
Councillor Graham Newman, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for education and young people, said: “Every single school in the Stowmarket and Stowupland areas, excluding the middle schools, is anxious to complete the programme and indeed promoted the proposal to the county council. You need only look at the most recent results in Haverhill and Lowestoft to see significant improvement in Key Stage Two results, following reorganisation.”

I agree with the above. Why hasn't the EADT mentioned approx 200 people who attended the meeting to hear speakers including Nigel Wyatt, National Middle Schools Forum, Graham White (NUT) and teachers give their reasons as to why closing the FOUR middle schools in this area is ill thought out. Even MP David Ruffley admitted that SOR was a "mess" and that was reported in Bury Free Press last Friday! Why are the views of 1,300 parents in this community not being heard?

What a poorly written, bland report of a meeting with such fire and vigour!! You even manage to fail to mention the local MP - Mr Ruffley - who listened and answered range of pertinent and thought provoking questions. The only quote you use is from Mr Newman - who didn't even have the courtesy to attend the meeting. Where were you Mr Newman??
