THE Suffolk dialect is the latest aspect of our culture to come under the spotlight as we look at what curious about our county.

The Curious County campaign which has sparked so much debate was officially launched today. And once again it has people talking about what curious really means.

Alison Connors, an avid walker and photography enthusiast has her own ideas.

One of her favourite spots is Southwold, a place she believes inspires ones curiosity.

Alison said: “This is a most magical little town on the Suffolk coast.

“We will begin with Southwold Pier. What a glowing white landmark of a masterpiece this is. The pier was originally built in 1899. A steam ship called The Belle made daily trips from London to Southwold Pier bringing in the Victorian holidaymakers.

“Damage in 1934 was followed by renovation which began in 1987 and was completed for the re-opening in 2002. It has a new landing stage and a traditional selection of quirky amusements in the arcade; an example being a device where you can Whack a Banker.

“The beach is sandy and the promenade has an elevated stretch where you can view the coast from a high vantage point.

“The town is excellent for shopping, eating out and for evening entertainment. Opposite the Pier is the Boating Lake which is perfect old fashioned fun for everyone.

“Georgian and Edwardian architecture, endless green spaces, vibrant and relaxing Southwold will inevitably sow the seed of return within before you have even left.

Embracing the essence of the Curious Coutny campaign, which is being pushed via social media in an attempt to bring visitors to this varied and beautiful corner of East Anglia, Alison has come up with her own slogan.

Ride the Suffolk Adventure Wain, in her opinion, would get potential visitors talking about the county.

“The word ‘wain’ I recently discovered is Suffolk dialect for ‘wagon’. The word is used for the title of that famous Suffolk painting The Hay Wain by John Constable.”

“I can see that using a Suffolk dialect word will make the above title exclusive to the county of Suffolk. I am sure that the future tourist and the Suffolk local would appreciate usage of that word.

“Having the connection with Constable Country is surely priceless.”

Meanwhile, our followers on Twitter have been telling us that it is the “variety” that makes Suffolk curious, and a great place to visit.
