Suffolk: Unsung heroes of community to be honoured at awards ceremony tonight

UNSUNG heroes and community champions from all walks of life will be honoured tonight at the Stars of Suffolk Awards ceremony in Ipswich.


Nominations have flooded in over the last few months as people put forward carers, charity workers and sporting greats across the event’s 13 categories.

Stars of Suffolk is supported by the Ipswich Star, sister title the EADT and Suffolk County Council.

Tonight’s ceremony will take place at Suffolk New College.

Mick parker of Parker Communications, one of the organisers and founders of the awards, said: “I just love these awards.

“When these people find out they have won they are just blown away – they don’t expect the reward.

“It’s just a wonderful evening.”

The categories for this year’s awards include unsung hero of the year, sports person of the year and community champion.

People who have been nominated for gongs over the last few months have included taxi driver Kevin Robey, who gave life-saving CPR to a motorist who suffered a heart attack, and Olympic heroes Anthony Ogogo and Zoe Newson.

Ogogo said: “Hopefully I have inspired kids from Suffolk and East Anglia to take up sports and do better things with their lives.”

Winners in previous years have included Mason Fountain, a young boy who set up his own charity after finding out he had a brain tumour, and Kerry Thorpe.
