It happened at the Mace shop in Otley Road, Sutton, near Woodbridge, in the early hours of this morning.

Police were alerted at 4.40am when an intruder alarm sounded and discovered there had been a break-in.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said offenders had smashed the metal shutter and front door window to gain entry and had stolen a large quantity of cigarettes, cans of beer and other alcohol.

He said they tried to set fire to some paper on a notice board, which had created smoke, but there was not really any fire damage.

A fire appliance from Woodbridge and one from Ipswich East were sent to the scene.

Crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel and a thermal imaging camera to fight the blaze.

By 5.12am the incident was under control.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw a dark green Ford and two men in the area at the time to contact the force on 101.
